Monopoly | Kidz Zone

Monopoly  the game is named after the economic concept of monopoly, the domination of a market by a single entity, originally created in 1904.  Originally created to help explain the single tax theory, it was first commercially available in 1924.

In 1941, the British Secret Service had John Waddington Ltd (the licensed manufacturer of the game outside the US) create a special edition for World War II prisoners of war held by the Nazis.

Hidden inside these games were maps, compasses, real money, and other objects useful for escaping. They were distributed to prisoners by secret service-created fake charity groups.

There have been many worldwide versions of Monopoly and also many UK versions including a Visa-branded game with cards instead of cash.  But nothing comes close to the original game.

Like Puzzles and Love the Beatles?

The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960. They are one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music.  From 1962, the group consisted of John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals). Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the group later worked in many genres ranging from pop ballads to psychedelic rock, often incorporating classical and other elements in innovative ways. The nature of their enormous popularity, which first emerged as "Beatlemania", transformed as their song writing grew in sophistication. They came to be perceived as the embodiment of ideals of the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s.

Rummikub is the fast paced game of tile manipulation and skill for 2 to 4 players.  Easy to learn yet hard to master, Rummikub challenges each player's wit against the other in the race to use all your tiles before your opponents.  One of the world's most compulsive family games, no game is the same.

Be the first player to go 'Rummikub' by using all your tiles in runs or groups and accumulating the highest score. Rummikub comes with 106 tiles including 8 sets numbered 1 to 13 in 4 colours and 2 jokers, 4 racks, 4 rack holders and detailed rules. Rummikub is is sure to provide hours of amusement.

Rummikub was invented by Ephraim Hertzano, a Romanian-born Jew, who immigrated to Mandate Palestine in the early 1930s. He hand-made the first sets with his family in the backyard of his home. The game combines elements of rummy, dominoes, mah-jongg and chess. Hertzano sold the first sets door-to-door and on a consignment basis at small shops. Over the years, the family licensed it to other countries and it became Israel’s #1 export game. In 1977, it became a bestselling game in the United States.

Hertzano's 'Official Rummikub Book', published in 1978, describes three different versions of the game: American, Sabra and International. Modern Rummikub sets include only the Sabra version rules, with no mention of the others, and there are variations in the rules between publishers.

Try Rummikub for yourself now and see just how much fun it is…

Crayola 3D Chalk

Brand new from Crayola is 3D Pavement Chalk.  Every chalk stick has two specially paired colours. Use them together to create the best 3D effects. When you wear your 3D glasses (included with the set) - the colours literally ‘pop’ at different levels! WOW!

Image2So how does it work?

Draw a big red square. Make a wide blue U around it - with a thumb space between the colours. Put on your 3D glasses. The red ‘jumps out at you’. Look at it from different angles.

So what’s the secret?

Warm colours, like red, appear HIGH. Cool colours, like blue, seem LOW. Simple, effective!
